I wanted to see what I would have had to pay if I lived in the States and had my accident down there…
After a ton of Googling, I came up with this (this is hypothetically specific to costs and rates in New York City/Brooklyn as med costs vary between states)
Minimum average cost for a ride in an ambulance - $500.00
Minimum average cost for a trip to the ER - $2,000.00
Treatment for moderate contusions and skin trauma *wait for it* - $7,743.00, looked up and found in Brooklyn Medical Center’s chargemaster (and I’m not sure if this maybe absorbs or includes ER costs?)
Aggregate total of minimum average cost for each x-ray I took (knee; left hand; shoulder) - $540.00
Drugs (in USD) - $75.00
If I wasn’t insured, it looks like I would have had to fork up approximately $10,858.00!!!!, out of pocket.
I didn’t include administration fees.
And if “that’s not how it works”, then, Anyone— show me how it works and let me know what my actual medical bill would have been.
But still, these are staggering rates.
I just received my hospital bill from Trillium Health Partners and it came to a whopping:
I only need to pay $45.00 because OHIP didn’t cover my ambulance ride. I will gladly pay this bill and then some.
I don’t know of any other developed and quasi-prosperous country who financially guts their sick and unwell as much as our neighbours down south, but it’s grotesque and cruel.
So good luck with all of that, America.
