I said this to somebody today, believing that everyone gets their hate on when it comes to Jerry (especially in contrast to Rick, because everyone has a mysterious mutual hard-on for the charming, smart-ass, insufferable Bukowski archetype, the Archer's and Hank Moody's of the world so to speak...)
"I seriously believe the writers/creators wanted to create a character like Jerry just to let it be the ant they constantly fry under a magnifying glass (I think my theory was finally confirmed with the Jerry drop-off daycare, hahaha). They sadistically gave Jerry enough self-awareness to be relentlessly confronted with his half-a-man-ness... your classic self-fulfilling prophecy loop, "Fuck, I'm just half a man! Half a husband where my wife is loath to fuck me, half a father where my kids can't respect me!" Just so stupidly self-loathing that you want to shake the shit out of him and yell, "You overthinking this shit is what makes you half a man!!!" He can't even properly own his guilty pleasures, they make him feel way too guilty than anyone should feel. But that's Jerry, letting the pain of how much of a simple fucking creature he is get to him. There was one episode where some alien reassures him about his attachment to his R2D2 quarters. The dialogue unfolded perfectly.
Small, simple, petty, losery, self-loathing Jerry. Jerry, who of course asks to be given an apple award for an apple ad pitch, Jerry, who of course desperately clings to his hypothetical TV fame in another reality...
Jerry, the perfect loser. This is why I like the character Jerry.
Then the one episode where Jerry is empowered and self-assured and goes on a Cronenbergs killing rampage is the one where Beth finally fucks him and for like, A MINUTE, he's likeable. But "it so happens to be" the one reality Rick and Morty quickly abandon, lol..."
